After the flood, God's instruction to Noah and his family was:
"Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth." - Ge 9:1
Unfortunately, his descendants, by and large, disobeyed this order. What was their plan?
"And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top is in the heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth." - Ge 11:4
That's the ancient version of globalism and one world government!! Government was tied up with religion. The top of the tower was to be "in heaven"; the meaning is that it would be an observatory and a platform for the worship of celestial objects.
What was God's response?
"Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they cannot understand one another’s speech. So Jehovah scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore its name is called Babel, because there Jehovah confused the language of all the earth; and from there Jehovah scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth." - Ge 11: 7-9
Legendary stories alluding to this incident are not as widespread as stories about Noah's Flood, suggesting that many people did not realize what had happened. The archaeologist George Smith found an inscription in Babylon that read in part as follows: "The building of the illustrious tower offended the gods. In a night they threw down what they had built. They scattered them abroad and made strange their speech." (Cited in Halley's Bible Handbook (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1965), p.84)
How many languages did God generate? No one knows. But even secular linguists recognize that all the languages in the world come from a single prototype language (which some believe must be a form of Hebrew, based on some evidence and the notion that good people like Shem would not have been part of the rebellion at Babel). Further, the languages of the world can be divided into three families, that Bible students correlate to the descendants of Japheth, Ham and Shem. The different languages would force people to migrate away from each other. In a nutshell, the Shemites remained close to the middle east, the Hamites went down to Africa, and the Japhethites spread over to Europe and other parts of the world. It has been possible to trace this migration in some detail. This has been done by correlating the "table of nations" in Genesis 10 with the ancient names of various places (that are often named after their founders).
Skin color and other body features would have been influenced (to some extent) by these migratory patterns. For instance, dark skin is desirable in hot sunny climates. Thus, fair skinned Africans would be unhealthy, have less children and die out, resulting in a dark skinned population. In frigid climates, dark skin prevents the synthesis of vitamin D from the little sunlight that's available, and thus, dark skinned ancient Europeans would have been less healthy than their fair skinned counterparts. Ultimately, they must have died out, and today's Europeans are all fair skinned.
The migrating groups set up their civilizations wherever they went. As I mentioned above, the ancients were technologically advanced. Surely enough, advanced civilizations sprung up all over the world around 4000 years ago. Many of these migrating groups may not have retained the existing technology with them. Such people would have to start from scratch all over again, and must have led a hand to mouth existence, living in caves, and using stone tools for hunting. Add to their remains some dubious dating methods, and there you have the "Stone Age" that evolutionists talk about. When we look at ancient advanced civilizations, two facts stand out:
These facts fly in the face of evolutionary theory, but are just what to expect if the Bible is true. It was not a bunch of cave men who stepped out of the ark. Noah and his sons had hundreds of years of learning behind them in the technology that existed before the flood. When they spread out after the Babel fiasco, all they had to do was implement the technology they already knew - there was no need of slow painful discovery.
Why did these cultures decay instead of advancing further? Romans 1 holds the clue:-
God rewards righteousness and punishes unrighteousness:-
"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness" - Rom 1:18
The founders of the various civilizations were close descendants of Noah and thus knew the truth about God, the creation and the flood. But instead of proclaiming the truth, they hid it in unrighteousness. Unfortunately, these civilizations carried over the idolatry of Babel along with them (instead of the godly heritage of Noah and Shem).
"Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things."
Exactly. If you study the religions of the ancient civilizations, you only see vestiges of the truths of the Bible. The prominent features are the worship of human like demi-gods, animals and the forces of nature.
So,what does God do about this?
"Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not appropriate, being filled with all unrighteousness" - Rom 1:24,26,28
When people rejected God, He gave them over to immorality. In turn, immorality, especially sexual immorality leads to the decay of society, and thus of the civilization. Thus, as the years went along, these advanced civilizations decayed. (Sadly, this is what we're seeing today in the West, which used to be Christian, but then turned its back on God). This decay began to be reversed about 500 years ago in Europe, due to a proliferation of the scriptures (the printing press was invented in around 1457). Of course, there were always godly exceptions to idolatry like Job. It is a few generations after Babel that God begins to deal individually with Abraham, and then with the nation of Israel (Gen 12:1)
Thousands of years later, technology pioneered in Judeo-Christian Europe would permit long forgotten cousins to meet again! A lot of good came out of this, because the technologically advanced Europeans brought the gospel to cultures that had forgotten God and decayed over a period of 3500-4000 years. However, this meeting also had horrific consequences for the following reasons:-
Today, with technology to our help, the curse of Babel is slowly being overcome. Most people have the Bible in a language that they speak, and God is gathering people from everywhere. In Revelation, the ransomed sing:
"Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation" - Re 5:9
Dear believer, you and I are living in this late age, and it is our heavenly mandate to let everyone know - there is one way to God!
