My name is Alan K. Roy (Lalan) and I was born into a Hindu family in a remote village called Morsandi in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, India. According to my father, I was the 7th child to my parents. All the previous six passed away soon after their births. When I was born, my parents performed many rituals, prayers and sacrifices to save my life. They even visited temples in Nepal and took many vows for my life. My parents took me to Deoghar (also known as Baidyanath Dham pilgrimage centre) for seven years. We would walk to the place barefoot, dressed in saffron. There is hardly any temple or Hindu pilgrimage centre in Bihar and the region of India bordering Nepal that I have not visited.
Shortly after I was born, my parents had another child, who also passed away. So I was brought up at home as a very special child offered under the care and protection of lord Siva, one of the chief gods of Hinduism
. As part of a vow, my hair was grown as a dedication to lord Siva till my 7th year. It became into thick, hard lumps. When the period of the vow was over I was taken to the temple and after many rituals, my head was shaved. I was taught to follow the strict paths of the Hindu religion from my childhood.
Later, twins were born to my parents, a boy and a girl, but the baby boy soon passed away. God thus blessed me with a sister too. Looking back, I thank the God of heaven who saw me before the foundation of the world and spared my life.
When I was to go for schooling, my parents though illiterate, desired that I should get the best education possible and put me in a Christian Boarding School run by Christian missionaries at our village. I do believe that it was God’s plan for my life. So from my school days, I had the opportunity to hear and learn God’s word. We had Bible study every morning and evening for one hour. Mr. M. A. Ramadas, Principal of the school, took a great interest in us; he was keen that we be led to the truth. In 1998, after one Saturday class, by Jeby K Simon, a full time Bible teacher, I was convinced of my sin, its eternal consequences and that no one can save himself from this eternal punishment through his own efforts. I was convinced from the Bible that the Lord Jesus came to save me from my sins. He died for me and rose again for my justification (John 3:16, Romans 4:25). On that Saturday, I received Jesus Christ as my Lord and personal Saviour as specified in Romans 10:9. Joy flooded my heart and the Lord gave me the confidence that He had accepted me as His child.
As a boy living in a boarding school, I was extremely mischievous. Lying, stealing, and disrespect for authority were my second nature. But God worked in my heart, transforming me into a new person. The Bible says that God conforms us to the image of His Son, Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29), and I found this to be true in my life. I started to grow spiritually through the fellowship of God’s people at Rehoboth Brethren Assembly, Motipur.
After my 7th standard, I moved to Patna, the capital of the state of Bihar, for my further studies. There also the Lord Jesus provided me a nice Christian atmosphere. After my 10th standard, I was baptized on the 11th of May, 2008 in the Patna Believer’s Brethren Assembly. I completed my 12th standard in 2010.
After I grew in my Christian life, I became concerned about my only sister, Vibha Kumari and her future. I prayed that she would be admitted in some Christian Missionary School so that she too may have the opportunity to know about the Lord Jesus. God granted my request and she got admission in a residential Christian school in Kerala (South India). She has received Jesus Christ as her personal saviour; I am eagerly waiting and praying for her to obey the Lord by being baptized.
My parents do not actively oppose our faith but they still follow their own ancestral traditions. They expect my sister and I to return one day to our old faith. I love my parents and my community very much, but no matter how much one loves people, it is not correct to embrace falsehood to please them. The Bible asks us to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). It is my great desire that my parents would receive the Lord Jesus as their saviour so that all of us together can enjoy the privilege of knowing the Only True God and avail of the eternal life that He freely gives.
From my childhood I had a great desire to become a pilot. God in His mercy granted my desire and in connection with that I came to Mumbai and took admission for ground class training. As I was poor in English, many of my friends discouraged me saying that I would not be able to finish the course. But the Lord Jesus in His grace enabled me to successfully clear my DGCA exams. I will now train in Canada. As of 2014, I am in fellowship with the Christian Believers’ Assembly, Borivali, Mumbai
As you can see, I became a disciple of Jesus Christ when I was very young. Does that mean that my decision was not genuine? Far from it. As I have grown physically, my understanding of the gospel
that I accepted as a child has increased. May I share with you some of these basic truths concerning our life?
The Bible is the guide book regarding our life given by our Creator and Designer, God. Among all the creatures that God made on earth, we human beings are the only ones who possess a spirit. That is why we crave for God in spite of all our achievements and supposed self-sufficiency. But there is a problem between God and man. God’s word says, "All have sinned and come short of God’s glory" (Romans 3:23). Sin is rebellion against God and it separates us from God. God, being just, has appointed a day of judgment
. "It is appointed for man once to die and after that the judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). At that time God will reward every man for his sin. "The wages of sin is death [i.e. eternal separation from God for ever in hell fire]" (Romans 6:23). God confirms that none of us can save ourselves from this. Our good works are as filthy rags before God (Isaiah 64:6). So God planned to save mankind by coming down into this world
. This incarnation is Jesus
. His mission was to save man from his sin for which He (the Lord Jesus) had to shed His blood. God’s decree is that there is no remission of sins with out the shedding of blood (Hebrews 9:22). The Lord Jesus fulfilled this decree by offering Himself as a sacrifice on the cross of Calvary. He died for our sins
and rose again
on the third day proving Himself to be the only savior of mankind. After fulfilling His mission He went back to heaven with the promise that He will return
to take home with Him those who believe on Him as their Savior and Lord. So it is my humble request that you consider your life and receive Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and Lord and escape from the eternal punishment that God has appointed for sinners. May God help you.
